Happy Birthday, Aquamarine Babies!

If you are born in March, you have a birthstone that is a dreamy, sea blue. The name of this gems literally means “sea water.” Who doesn’t love the blues of the sea? Aquamarine lore tells us that the gem was thought to keep sailors safe at sea and to keep marriages happy. Aquas are thought to provide protection and healing. Whatever their magical properties, I know that aquamarine jewelry just delights all my clients and therein lies its magic.

Here is some consumer information for you.  Most aquamarine gems are heat treated to deepen their color, which ranges from a soft, watery blue to teal, gray-blue, on to green.  The blue hue ranges in depth from pale, commercial grade to the unheated, deep blue that we see in aqua from the Santa Maria mine in Brazil.

The care for an aquamarine is normal and they can be worn well, although if you are wearing a big, aqua cocktail ring, it’s best to remove it before doing anything utilitarian. I’m going to introduce a line of aquamarine and pearls, since I think they are gorgeous together and both relate to water, one of my favorite elements.

In this marvelous photo from GIA, they tell us that “the transmitted light reveals several two-phase 'fingerprint' inclusions made of gas bubbles trapped in liquid.”
