Tucson Diary

Making decisions at the show in Tucson is a multi-stage process for me. During hours 1-3, I walk, look, and absorb who has what material. I celebrate the fact that I get to do this for a living and a little voice wants one of everything. I stop for a water and chocolate break and try to keep myself from getting overwhelmed by the creative design machine that is whirring in my head.

Having done the initial examination, I shop for the things you said you wanted, as well as more of the things you’ve loved and bought from me. That gives me focus and productivity.

Next, I open myself up to that creative flow and allow it to expand my vision as I walk again through several different shows. I look for exceptional stones and pearls, good values, and cool new materials you haven’t seen yet but should. I talk with my long-time suppliers and occasionally, find a new one to love. I listen to their stories, feel them out for honesty and trustworthiness, and allow them to know me so they can trust me, too.

Fresh Water PearlsFresh Water Pearl

I’m very into Tahitian pearls right now, so there was a lot of looking and buying. I also brought home some steel-blue, high-luster Akoya pearls. These are grown in the same beds as the Mikimoto pearls, but they are not white. These strands are a delicate, pale blue with hints of iridescence. I have a couple of gorgeous, 20” Tahitian strands coming my way, too. They are freshly harvested pearls from my supplier in Tahiti and I can’t wait.

Pearl String

I’ve gotten a big handful of new teal and green sapphires to make the rings you love. There is some intense lime green Pakistani peridot and some tropical fruit-colored tourmaline as well as a dynamite pair of deep green round tourmalines just waiting for some earrings.
